Lionfish with Coral

$1,400.00

Gyotaku of a Brown Trout with Suminagashi by master artist Dwight Hwang.

Suminagashi is done by placing the paper into a well of floating ink which soaks into the paper.

Technical Expertise: Highest level of expertise seen within the art form

To make this print, Dwight Hwang had to remove the spines from the Lionfish and print it piece by piece. This is a challenging technique to make the fish appear 3D with spines shooting off at angles like a real life underwater scene. Printing coral is rarely attempted by gyotaku artists and when done is not visually appealing like Dwight Hwang’s ability to print hard surfaces like coral and wood.

Rarity Factor: Very Rare

I have not found another gyotaku artist who is able to make prints like these and there are only a few by Dwight Hwang.

Dimensions: 13” x 20”
